Really big bucks for library bosses!

New York Library Officials’ Pay? SHHH
( New York Times 11/19/06)
Not much for Local 1930 members!
No pay date for the 2%!

At our last collective bargaining session with NYPL management on Monday, November 13 – not much happened. The Library made a presentation about the Library’s budget showing graphs that were barely readable that revenues were flat, cost were rising and that the Library has a 25 million dollar short fall, blah, blah – we’ve heard it all before. No date was offered to pay the 2% owed Local 1930 members as of August 6, 2006. No date for a Bonus Day was set. According to NYPL, it would be too costly. How can NYPL management in good conscious deny us benefits due us!

Why must the library continue to antagonize the library workers? What arrogance!

That was before the NY Times 11/19/06 article 'New York Library Officials’ Pay Shhh' appeared. Revealed in this article information taken from the library’s most recent federal tax filings that NYPL President Paul LeClerc’s total compensation package is a grand total of $813,345 for one year!

Is there any proof that this compensation is based on performance? It was also revealed that the CEO’s of the Research and Branch Libraries make over $300,000 a year. Library management can take care of themselves but not library services and library staff.

The City of New York has a surplus of at least 2 BILLION dollars. The Library management did not get any new money for library services. In fact the Library is holding out 2% hostage in these contract negotiations.

Contract negotiations are scheduled with NYPL on Friday, December 1.

To the Editor,

“New York Library Officials’ Pay? Shhh” (Nov. 19, 2006) reveals what we at Local 1930, the New York Public Library Guild, DC 37, AFSCME have always known:
when it comes to compensation for the top officials at the New York Public Library, the sky’s the limit. However, when it comes to raises for our members, we are being nickeled and dimed to death. It’s an outrage.

It is insulting to discover the huge salaries management grants itself at a time when our union is in stalled contract negotiations.

A 2% increase was due us as of August 1, 2006. Compare Dr. LeClerc’s total annual package worth $813,345 to the starting salary for librarians of $37,043 and entry level clerical positions of $21,666.

NYPL officials’ biggest talent appears to be giving themselves big raises with the complicity of a secretive Board. It is unclear if these compensation packages are funded publicly or privately.

Most branches and the Research Libraries are only open 5 days a week. NYPL management, very successful at getting more money for themselves, has failed to get more money for library services and library staff when the city has a surplus of over two billion dollars.

No wonder they’re keeping so quiet.

Sincerely,
Lynn Taylor,
